Here is a list of sewing terms that are commonly mis-spelled or misused:

Yolk is the yellow inner portion of an egg.
Yoke is the fitted or shaped piece at the top of a shirt or other garment.

Flair is an ability to make good use of something or an attractive quality.
Flare is the open or outward spread of a garment.

Material means of or relating to matter or physical form
Fabric is the stuff we sew for clothing or other articles, i.e. cloth.

Muslim is an adherent of Islam.
Muslin is a plain woven fabric used for testing garment construction.

Linen means the fiber linen from the flax plant.
Linen does not mean rayon, polyester, silk, or hemp.
Linen Weave can refer to any fabric with a slightly slubbed looser weave.
One can also say Silk Linen, for example, to describe this type of weave.
It is never appropriate to mis-label fiber content even if you saw it at JoAnne's.
It is illegal in the US to sell fiber, fabric, yarn, or finished garments with inaccurate fiber content labeling.

When describing a fiber composed of 25% silk and 75% rayon it is appropriate to
list the majority content first, i.e. rayon/silk blend NOT the other way around.
If you are labeling a garment, fabric, fiber, or yarn for sale it is illegal in the US to list the fiber content backwards.

And did you know that if you worked in the garment industry you would call
buttons, zippers, seam binding, and the like trimsNotions are just odd
ideas we all get from time to time.
